Today

Today I complained that my shoes didn't match with my bag
When a solider who just returned home lost his leg
Today I complained that my breakfast was distasteful
When there is a woman in Africa who would trade places with me
Today I complained that my son was driving me crazy
When my friend lost her son to leukemia
Today I complained that I hate my small apartment
When people are losing their homes due to foreclosures
Today I complained about my life not being perfect
When some one's life ended today.

Expired Time

Given a title upon my arrival
Yet he didn't fulfill the requirements
So he caste his absentee ballot
For all the times that truly mattered
Like Graduations, proms, and even the arrival of his grandson
Metal gray bars and a life sentence separates us
Angry bitter tears and broken promises
one lie after another could have turned into fairy tale
Time will heal all wounds but it will never have enough
Quarters too feed the meter of his time absent in my life.

The Forecast

The forecast predicted rain
Hail, sleet, and snow
The doctor predicted three months
And then a departure to the silent land
shattered hearts with no glue
A family torn a part with no clue
Yet she always knew that her pain
Would leave them in vain
Stage three of breast cancer
Cursed her body like a lion eating its prey
From there we knew death had entered the room
To carry her away like the forecast predicted.

A Woman Unfolding

A woman unfolding like a bird with closed wings
But only I have opened mines to fly
Surviving the growing pains
And even the responsibilities I have gained
The wind calls me to fly then I look and see
That this woman unfolding has turned into a lovely black butterfly
With a mind strong like one of the world leaders
I have become the essence of my ancestors who smile upon me
to be all that I can be
because as the world can see I am unfolding like no other man, woman or child.
